Functions of the nose

As part of the respiratory system, the nose serves several functions. The nose is the organ of smell and a main passageway for air into and out of the lungs. The nose warms, moistens, and cleans the air before it enters the lungs.
The air resonating in the nose assists in giving the voice its particular sound. This is why individuals suffering with a stuffed nose sound differently than normal. The shape of the nasal septum also plays a role in the sound of the voice. Surgery on the nose may also alter the sound of a person's voice.
